Do you have a large soaker tub that needs a little update? Check out my $9 bathtub makeover!
My bathroom has slowly gotten updated, but the one thing that really hadn’t been touched was the ginormous soaker tub. Honestly, I’m not a “bath person” so it rarely gets used.
I wanted to give is a simple update, without spending much money. So, here was my inspiration picture…

I LOVE the classic and luxurious feel. To recreate the look for my bathtub makeover, I bought a 4X8 sheet of masonite for less than $9 at the home improvement store.
I had the store cut it to size, so it was easier to carry and I didn’t have to worry about making perfectly straight cuts.
Here’s where my technical skills came into play 😉 ….I measured the center, then I used a large oval platter to make the center design.

For the outside detail, I used a scrap 2″x4″ as a template.

The center cutout was the most challenging because I didn’t have a compass or any fancy tools.
The width of the 2×4 is actually 3.5″, so I just used a tape measure and went around the outside of the oval making marks. Then I did my best to trace.

I used a multipurpose tool to cut the masonite, but you could also use a jigsaw.
Here’s what it looked like before I painted it white:

After a few coats of white paint…

It fits snuggly, but I secured it with white, paintable, waterproof caulk. The caulk polished it off and filled in the gaps.
I get asked about the artwork over the tub often and you can find it HERE.

I think my $9 was money well spent!!

Classy! It’s really amazing what you can do with such a small budget.
I love how it turned out! Beautiful! I’m curious to see how it hold up. It looks like the hardboard we used for our daughter’s wedding backdrop. Which soaked up the humidity and warped 🙁 If it holds up then I am hopping on board to make my ugly hollow core doors look like six panel doors in my bathroom!
Tori, it seems to be holding up but I’ll have to do updated post in a few months!
This is really fantastic. I’m dying to know how it has held up, so I know whether to go get my Masonite!
Angela, Beautiful and to finish it with the word of “Grace”. I will be trying this! Grace and peace.
Dorothy, thank you!
I’m always impressed by DIY projects that use simple materials in unexpected ways. The masonite panel idea is genius, and the finished result looks so clean and polished. Definitely bookmarking this for future bathroom inspiration!
How did you get the lip of the bathtub flush with the makeover portion? My tub does not have the lip to make the additional portions fit underneath it .
This content is absolutely brilliant! You’ve captured the essence of the topic perfectly while keeping it engaging and relatable. Hats off to you!

This is such a smart and creative update for such a small budget! I love how classic and high-end it looks considering it was only $9. Proof that you don’t need a full renovation to make a big visual impact.
This makeover turned out beautifully! I appreciate how you showed that you don’t need fancy tools or advanced skills to pull this off. The caulk detail really makes it look custom and built-in—such a great transformation.
Wow, I didn’t realize a bathtub could be refreshed for just $9! I tried a small DIY project in my bathroom here in the US, and even simple changes like this can make a huge difference.
