media cabinet makeover: from entertainment center to bookshelves

by Angela on August 15, 2012

OK so when I have a vision, my family can’t always see.  {By family, in this case, I mean my husband and parents}  Everyone thought I was CR-AZY when I brought an old entrainment center home.  My mom even offered to pay me to bring it back!

BUT, hopefully they feel differently now…the jury is still out because none of them have see it finished until now.

Here’s the before and after.  I would say it’s much better, what do you think??

I removed the top doors and all the “guts” in the upper section.  I painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk paint (TM) in Old Ocher and Paris Grey then distressed it.  I then reattached some of the existing supports and cut some shelves to fit.

All of that was the easy part!!  Styling the shelves was a bit of  a challenge for me.

The shelves are all very wide, so there was a lot of space to “fill.”  I started by gathering up things from around the house that I thought would all work together.  Books were a given.

Then I just played around with the height and depth of all the items.  Adding books or other objects to raise objects for more dimension.

The basket on top was previously used a side table for couch, but adds even more height and texture.

Let me know what you think!

Today was my daughter’s first day back to school as a 1st Grader and her first time going all day.  There were some tears this morning {just from me}.

Hope you all are having a good week and dealing well with back to school! ;)

You did a great job painting it AND a great job with your vignettes. I’d say it’s a success all the way around.
